blogsurfing and musical geekery

i found a few things while wandering around the blogosphere this morning. (i wasn't awake enough to begin pounding out an entry of my own yet.)

check this out.

this little diversion comes courtesy of kal. (i'm sticking it on my radio webpage, too.)

i got a pretty good giggle out of this this morning. (though i'm not ashamed to admit "out of the blue" was one of the first tapes i ever bought.)

speaking of music, since i'm here at the station all day, i'm inspired to write about musical sorts of things.

i had a thought on the way to work, which was a little surprising, as i was (and still am) half asleep (but the paycheck will be HUGE! well, maybe a little bigger than usual, anyway)- not exactly the ideal condition for yours truly to come up with brilliant plans.

here goes: find the connection between the following pairs of bands. it may take one step...maybe more than one....possibly more/fewer steps than i need. at any rate, if you have time to kill, take a crack at the list. i'll try to remember to put up my answers after a few folks have a taken a shot. (i predict larry, penny, kal and kristin will be all over this. digitalicat, however, will be too busy making obscene phone calls.)

let me use this one as an example, since it'd be a pretty tough one to get (unless you're as much of an 80s music geek as i am):

u2 -->the cult

bono of u2 was good friends with michael hutchence of inxs (in fact, during a concert right after michael died, "one" was dedicated to his memory), who was up for the role of jim morrison in the doors...a role currently being played (on tour) by ian astbury, of the cult.

(yes, i fully realize the magnitude of my musical geekiness....and i can cook too!)

your turn:
l.a. guns --> blind melon
depeche mode --> erasure
michael jackson -->george harrison
chic -->duran duran
alice cooper -->new edition

okay, that should keep you busy for a little while.

rest assured that i'll be back- it's going to be a long day.
finally- one of those pictures i promised you a week ago. nothing like delayed gratification, eh?

there i am, braces and all, with montezuma's castle (arizona) in the background.

find more pictures from my trip here.

Michael Jackson-->George Harrison

I of course take the easy one. He owns, what, half the rights to the beatles music catalog.

All the rest have me stumped, my queen.

duff said...

actually, i had a different connection in mind. i was going for just george harrison, not the whole group.

duff said...

i'm a little slow on the "my queen" part.....i didn't notice it at first.

but it gives me a great idea in case i do this sort of thing......

btw, on your mj-->gh connection, think "weird al"

i mean, you don't have to, but if you want a more challenging link....

or something like that.

Yeah, see, now you sound like an old aquaintance's programming professor. The prof wanted them to write a program that accomplished a certain thing and told them it would turn out to be a certain number of lines of code. this aquaintance did the program using about 50% less lines of code than the prof thought would be nessesary and the prof tried to tell him he failed the assignment. the aquaintance told teh prof, "no, you never said we had to use a certain amount of code you just said it would turn out to be a ceratin number of lines. My program gets the job done more efficiently and therefore is right and less time consuming to build and repair." Prof passed him with hihest grade in class.

Larry said...

along those lines:

Michael Jacson owns part of the beatle music catalog, george harrison was a beatle.

as for the more difficult link, I have no clue. but, doesn't matter, see explaination above.

I can't wait to see what you do with "my queen". whatever it is it will be entertaining

duff said...

so, you're calling me "anal-retentive", aren't you?

i suppose i can deal with it, as long as i'm stil your queen.

You work at a radio station how freaking cool.

L.A. Guns ---> Blind Melon
LA guns had a few members of guns and roses at first. Shanoon Hoon forgive me if i spelled his name wrong sang and was in the GnR video Dont Cry before Blind Melon made it big. I do Belive Traci Gunns of LA Guns is now dating the bumble bee girl from the Blind Melon Videos.

Micheal Jackson ---> George Harrison Well Larry took my reasoning of him asking for the rights back to the beatles song.I still havent made the connection with Weird AL yet. intresting Tidbit When Wacko Jacko was first getting big he asked Sir Paul McCarthy what he should do investment wise. Paul replies buy rights to music. So Wacko Jacko goes out and buys the whole beatles catalog that had to hurt.

Alice Cooper ---> New Edition one of the many groups that had the distinct pleasure of being decapitated by Mr. Coopers Guilotine on stage. Best was when he chopped Britney Spears head off.

IM just grasping at ropes here folks but ill be back with real answers for all them later today after i have a chance to wake up.

duff said...

i had no idea alice chopped the head off new edition. that wasn't the connection, though.

No just more knowledgable, and willing to take the long way.

I am just lazy, but, it is saturday, I am off work, and have not really moved form my room this morning. Why would I put the extra effort in if I am right without it?

Larry said...

Duff, meet Roy. My other musically knowledgable friend. We used to change radio stations and see how fast we could name songs and artists. Back then i was quick, now, not so much.

duff said...

roy's passed through here before. (i'm too lazy to look up posts- forgive me.)

at any rate, good to see you again, roy.

so you're saying your skills have atrophied to the point that i could beat you?

i mean, despite you being older and worldlier and whatnot.

Larry said...

Yes, that is what I am saying. Now if I turned the station I probably know the words bu the title and artist, unless it is one of my favorites, will almost definitely be beyond me.

Now about the older and worldlier comment...

duff said...

you are older.....the worldlier part is assumed.

Larry said...

Okay, I just thought you were trying to call me old. And being as that I am not too much older than you I would have been insulted. But, now I will let you continue with your worldlie assumption.

duff said...

you're slightly older. hang on- let me visit your profile and figure out by how much.

duff said...

uh...yeah....mr. p.i. who gives up nothing personal about himself.....

you're still older- i have just under a month to go before the big 2-7.

Larry said...

you have finally figured it out. the second reason I have not posted my pic. Small world.

Example: My neighbor in philly used to come to st. louis to visit his aunt and uncle for a month each summer. he is my age. His aunt and uncle live in a neighborhood that is approximately a 1/2 mile from the neighborhood i grew up in. He used to hang out with people I knew back 15 years ago. Small world.

Long story short you are approximately 8 months younger than myself.

Larry said...

Mesa Verde? Or just another location of cliff dwellings?

Larry said...

and if that is the pic you were talking about earlier than it wasnot coming up for me either.

da sister said...

I'm jealous of the pic. I wanted to go there when I was living in az. oh well. btw, did you know there are a lot of people that don't secure their WANs? I hopped online and I'm not even paying for it at home.

Larry said...

Yep, duff's sis, mine for some reason will be secure sometimes and not others. Being that I have no computer skills to speak of I can't figure it out. Also when I am out working every so often i pirate someone's signal to get online.

duff said...

larry: not finally- i've had that reason in the back of my mind for quite a while.

it's just more fun to pretend you're secretly hideous.

duff said...

i hadn't realized the picture was up already.

my profile pic was the one misbehaving, though it seems to be working now.

onto the matter of birthdays: that'd make you 1977, and therefore, old.

jeez- what a geezer.

forgive me, i have dial-up. what's a WAN?

Larry said...

Wireless Access Network

And who says I'm not hideous?

Kal said...

Hi-ho, sorry to bust in on the shameless flirting ;), but for MJ>GH, how about

Michael did Ebony and Ivory with Paul, who was of course a Beatle with George?

Weird Al? Well, both Al and Michael used Eddie Van Halen (unless I am completely wrong Eddie did do the guitar work for "Eat It", as he did "Beat It"), but I have no idea how to get to George Harrison from Weird Al.. Have to work on that...

And... compared to me, Mossy, Ms. Shagwell, and even Digi, you're both young 'uns...

duff said...

i didn't say you weren't...then again, if women are hitting on you, you can't be that bad.

Larry said...

Thanks Kal. I love feeling like a young bastard every once in awhile.

Duff, not often enough for my tastes, but, I will take that as a compliment anyway.

duff said...

kal:i was looking forward to your creativity. do you have any of weird al's 80s albums, by any chance?

and i can hang with the older crowd because i am mature beyond my years.

or maybe it's just because i make you guys laugh (or try to anyway.)

Larry said...

or that they are dirty old men and women but you just can't look for the negative in people can you. :)

duff said...

i try to give benefit of the doubt.....but once i'm crossed, that's pretty much the end of it.

Larry said...

sounds familiar

duff said...

hmmm...i don't have any long lost brothers- to the best of my knowledge, anyway.

da sister said...

There are actually two types of WANs. One is Wide Area Network, which is actually normal internet access. (LAN is local area network) The one that I meant to say was the wireless access network which larry was talking about....I was going to correct myself in case someone thought I was talking about the first WAN. The wireless is a network that you can set up providing that you have a cable modem, dsl, or t3. pretty much anything that can become an ethernet system. You can do it off of dial up, but it won't work very well. the cable modem, for example, is actually a router that goes out to the cable company's switch or hub. The router can be set up so that you can attach it to a base station for wireless use. the big thing on how well it will work is the amount of bandwidth that you have to work with.

Larry, you should have a way on your computer under whatever wireless thing you use to set up security features. I know on apple it's under wireless security. It basically is an encryption system with keys so only those that you want to have access to your wireless network will be allowed on.
Hope that helps in allowing you to secure your network.

sorry bout the long posting.

duff said...

no need to apologize, kiddo.

the technical stuff makes my head hurt, though.

or is it lack of sleep?

Anonymous said...

it makes my head hurt too, so i guess i'm slightly masocistic for being a network security major and doing what i do for work.
why don't you have aim up?

da sister said...

the above is suppose to me....just pulled a mama

duff said...

eh- lazy, i guess.

dotbar said...

Aw come on, you can admit it to me. You linked to that first guy because he is kind of cute. lol

duff said...

actually, he left a comment on one of my previous posts, so i wandered over to his blog, where i found the yoda thing....which i think is hilarious.

thanks for stopping by.

Kal said...

Hey - isn't WAN Wide area network? And LAN is local area network? WANs are basically bigger LANs?

And, re Weird Al: Actually I have a couple of Dr. Demento albums, and a slew of Dr. Demento shows I taped off the radio while in junior high. They are among my most precious possessions (ha ha).

Erasure/Depeche Mode: Vince Clark was original to both DM and Erasure.

As to the others, I have no idea.

Although I do know the guys from Chic became producers (Madonna's Like a Virgin) maybe the connection's there...

freewriter said...

"u2 -->the cult" that sounds like a new game: 6 degrees of musical separation.

and you made it in only 3.

da sister said...

I meant WLAN...i was smoking crack at the time that I wrote it out. Sad being that I had this info (the LAN and WAN) shoved down my throat while in the military and WLAN in my network security classes. So here is the proper breakdown:
WLAN for Wireless LAN
WAN for Wide Area Network
LAN for Local Area Network

Guitarroy said...

Ok Duff I have tried to find these connections and IM driving my self insane. It must be some super secret DJ club where you get this info.

Any clue as to when you will let us know the connections.
